POST CARE INSTRUCTIONS
NITROUS OXIDE
When your child received nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation, commonly called laughing gas, to help them feel relaxed and comfortable during dental treatment.
Nitrous oxide is one of the safest and most widely used sedation techniques in pediatric dentistry. It is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) as an effective way to reduce dental anxiety while allowing children to remain calm and cooperative during treatment.
During the procedure, your child remained fully awake, responsive, and able to breathe normally on their own. Protective reflexes such as coughing and swallowing remain intact while nitrous oxide is used.
At the completion of treatment, your child was given 100% oxygen, which helps remove the nitrous oxide from the body quickly.
What to Expect After Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide leaves the body very rapidly. Most children return to their normal behavior within minutes after the appointment.
After the visit, your child may:
Feel completely normal right away
Feel slightly tired if the appointment was long
Occasionally report mild dizziness or light-headedness briefly
These sensations typically resolve quickly once the nitrous oxide has cleared from the body. Because the medication does not remain in the bloodstream, there are usually no lingering sedative effects once your child leaves the office.
Eating and Drinking After the Appointment
Most children can eat and drink normally after their visit. If your child reports mild nausea or stomach discomfort (which is uncommon), we recommend starting with light foods and fluids, such as:
Water
Juice
Crackers
Toast
Applesauce
Once your child feels comfortable, they may resume their normal diet.
Returning to Normal Activities
Because nitrous oxide clears from the body very quickly, children can usually return to normal daily activities immediately.
This includes:
Returning to school
Playing
Participating in regular activities
However, if your child feels slightly tired after the appointment, allowing them to rest for a short period may help them feel better.
Nitrous Oxide Safety
Nitrous oxide has been used safely in dentistry for over 100 years and remains one of the most predictable and controllable sedation methods.
Benefits of nitrous oxide sedation include:
Rapid onset and rapid recovery
Adjustable sedation levels during treatment
Minimal side effects
No long-lasting sedative effects
Because of these advantages, nitrous oxide is considered one of the safest sedation options in pediatric dentistry.
