BABY’S FIRST DENTAL VISIT

Early dental care sets the trajectory for a lifetime of healthy smiles. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child visit the dentist by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth erupting. This initial milestone is not just a quick check. It is a critical preventive step. We monitor early jaw development, assess feeding habits, and help your child acclimate to the clinical environment in a positive, stress-free way.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE APPOINTMENT

We ask that all paperwork be completed through your patient portal by 5:00 PM on the day your appointment is scheduled. This allows our team to focus fully on creating a smooth, personalized, and positive experience for your child.

Upon arrival, you’ll find us on the second floor above Coffee Dose, with access to our complimentary parking spaces. You’ll be warmly welcomed by a member of our team, who will guide you through a brief office tour before getting your child comfortably seated.

To help your child feel at ease, we’ll turn on their favorite show and begin a gentle desensitization process—introducing them to the environment in a fun, non-threatening way. Every first visit is intentionally designed around comfort, trust-building, education, and open communication. We move at your child’s pace and maintain a calm, encouraging atmosphere to help prevent early dental anxiety.

During the visit, we will:

  • Review oral hygiene habits with parents

  • Perform a gentle pediatric cleaning (different from an adult cleaning)

  • Complete a thorough exam with one of our board-certified pediatric dentists

  • Apply fluoride or hydroxyapatite varnish to strengthen and protect developing teeth

It is very common for children—especially under age three—to cry during their first visit. This is a normal developmental response. We kindly ask parents to trust our team during this process. Even if your child is upset, our providers are highly trained to safely and efficiently complete the exam, ensuring we can properly assess oral health, clean effectively, and address any concerns.

To end on a positive note, your child will be invited to visit Tiny’s Toy Palace, where they can choose a special prize—because every great visit deserves a big smile.

KNEE-TO-KNEE EXAMINATION

Infants feel most secure when they remain close to their parent. That’s why we use a specialized knee-to-knee examination technique designed to keep your baby calm, supported, and safe throughout the visit.

You and one of our board-certified pediatric dentists will sit facing each other with knees touching. Your baby will rest comfortably on your lap and gently lean back into the dentist’s lap, maintaining constant physical contact with you.

This position allows us to perform a thorough, efficient visual exam of your child’s gums, jaw development, and erupting teeth—while prioritizing comfort, trust, and a positive first experience.

GENTLE CLEANING & CARIES RISK ASSESSMENT

We perform a gentle, age-appropriate cleaning using a professional electric toothbrush to safely remove plaque buildup and any early tartar.

During this visit, we also evaluate the strength and development of your child’s enamel, helping us identify early signs of vulnerability before cavities form.

Our team completes a comprehensive early childhood caries risk assessment, taking into account your child’s unique oral anatomy, diet, and daily habits. This allows us to provide personalized guidance and proactive care to keep your child’s smile healthy from the start.

PARENT EDUCATION & PROACTIVE HOME CARE

A successful first visit is centered on giving you the right tools and confidence to care for your child’s smile at home. We dedicate time to answering your questions and helping you build a realistic, sustainable daily routine for your baby.

  • Infant Oral Hygiene: We demonstrate exactly how to safely clean your baby’s gums and newly erupted teeth using simple, effective techniques.

  • Dietary Counseling: We review how nighttime feeding, milk, and early solid foods can impact enamel development and cavity risk.

  • Habit Monitoring: We discuss how pacifier use and thumb sucking can affect jaw growth and provide proven strategies to guide healthy development.

  • Teething Relief: We offer safe, evidence-based recommendations to help manage discomfort during the teething process.

Our goal is to empower you with clear, practical guidance so you can confidently support your child’s oral health every day.
